BREATHWORK

THE BREATHWORK PATH

At its core, the path of breathwork is an ancient practice reimagined for the modern seeker. It's more than just inhaling and exhaling; it's a journey within, a bridge between the conscious and the subconscious. It's about harnessing the breath's rhythm to navigate the rugged terrain of your inner world and reconnect with your purest essence, the breath.

The breathwork path involves manipulating the breath to create physiological and physical changes in the body. The breath reflects our inner state of mind. This can best be understood by observing how the breath changes during different states of emotions. In fear, the breath adjusts accordingly to a fast breath as a consequence of the heart rate increases. This is to allow sufficient oxygen to the body in what is deemed a fight or flight situation. In a calm state, the breath slows, and this allows the body and mind to relax. Bringing awareness to our breath and changing the way we breathe can therefore create changes in our minds and body.

Now, the fascinating part is what science reveals: Breathwork isn't just esoteric; it's grounded in physiology. It can reduce stress, enhance focus, and even unlock suppressed emotions. It's a reminder that your breath is not just the vehicle for oxygen; it's a key to unlocking your fullest potential.

The way you breathe affects the way you think and feel. It plays an important role in our health and bringing awareness to it is key. The path of breathwork has been used for millennia but has become more popularised recently due to pioneers like Wim Hof who have done incredible feats and brought breathwork and cold exposure to the mainstream world. Practising the breathwork path brings benefits to your emotional state of mind by decreasing stress levels and can also increase energy by filling the body with energy-rich oxygen. Breathwork has also been shown to increase immunity and to be better able to process emotions.

The breath is the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing to do before we die. The breath of life.

HOW TO DO BREATHWORK?

Embarking on the path of breathwork, you're taking crucial steps towards ascending the mind peak. Here's a beginner's guide to get you started on this transformative journey:

1. Find a Quiet Space

Begin in a serene environment where you won't be disturbed. Silence or gentle background music can enhance the experience.

2. Comfortable Posture

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. It can be on a chair, cushion, or yoga mat. Ensure your back is straight to allow for easy breathing.

3. Focus on Your Breath

Close your eyes and take a few natural breaths to settle in. Then, shift your attention to your breath. Breathe deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise. Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth.

4. Choose a Technique

There are various breathwork techniques. A simple one for beginners is the 4-7-8 method: Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. Repeat this cycle several times.

5. Stay Present

As you breathe, focus your mind solely on the breath. Thoughts will inevitably drift, but gently guide your attention back to your breath without judgment, like navigating the twists and turns of the mountain trail.

6. Observe Sensations

Pay attention to how your body responds. You might notice sensations like relaxation, warmth, or even emotional release. Each breath is a step closer to the summit of self-awareness.

7. Duration

Start with 5-10 minutes and gradually extend your practice as you become more comfortable. Some advanced breathwork sessions can last longer, but it's essential to go at your own pace.

8. Closure

To conclude, take a few natural breaths and gradually open your eyes. Reflect on your experience and how you feel. The lessons you've gained during your ascent are your treasures.

Or try some more advanced trails on the path of breathwork:

Wim Hof Method

Inhale fully, exhale out. Repeat 30 times. On the final exhale, breathe out then immediately hold your breath without air in the lungs. Hold this breath as long as possible. When you feel the urge to breathe in, inhale fully and hold this breath for 15 seconds. Exhale fully and repeat the 30 breaths. Do 3 rounds or more if you want to.

Breath of Fire

Inhale passively and exhale forcefully. During the exhale, contract your abdominal muscles and force the exhale out. The inhale and exhale should be quick and concise, both the same length, without any pauses in between.
